The superb Stockport Golf Club played host to 70 Greater Manchester Chamber Golf Society golfers for its April meeting. This top golfing venue even arranged for refreshing rain showers throughout the afternoon to assist the field. Yet a good number of the players clearly took inspiration from local celebrity David Dickinson with the Society’s bobby dazzlers returning impressive scores despite the damp conditions.
The Captain was not one of them. He has been producing some terrible scores of late. In fact, when he thinks he has hit his lowest ebb, a new round comes along to make him wonder where he thought the ebb was. The burdens of office fell heavily once again on him and indeed the Vice Captain who both returned a meagre 27 pts. Another good excuse was conjured by the classy Colin Gallimore (Courtyard Care) who found slow play to blame for his below par performance. Nice try Colin!
Robert Elliot (Care Asset Management) had just flown in from Orlando and not only had to cope with a dramatic change in weather conditions, but jet lag too. However, there was nothing Mickey Mouse about the big hitting Scot’s play as he returned a healthy 35pts. This was the first fixture for new member Dan Clark (JMW Solicitors). He crunched his new Taylor Made RBZ driver off the tee, striking a range of glorious shots that belied his 15 handicap. A return of 36pts seemed a travesty, with only disappointing putting keeping him out of the prizes. Mark Goodwin (Hays Energy) was among the prizes for the second time in a row, hitting a superb shot next to the 16th hole for a tap-in birdie and the nearest the pin.
Third place went to another new member Kieren McDonnell (Jackson Jackson & Sons) with the 13 handicapper building a great score of 37pts. The runner-up was patent attorney David Slattery (Wilson Gunn) who played a series of inventive shots for a superb 38pts off a handicap of 7. Our excellent sponsors for this event were Waxman Energy, who supply solar panels. But there was no daylight robbery about their Chairman Richard Waxman (16) taking the spoils – his score of 39pts in heavy conditions made him a worthy winner as well as a gracious supporter of the event.
The best visitor was Paul Mackie (42pts – 21 handicap) a guest of Jackson Jackson & Sons. Indeed he was so impressed he indicated he may become a full member. Well done Paul!
Only four managed to obtain twos in the breezy conditions, with 6 sleeves of Titleist Velocity and 1 sleeve of NXT Tour S balls presented to the skilled winners. The twos sweep as well as other donations raised £161 for the Captain's Charity, Bolton Hospice, bringing our total after two events to £323. Many thanks to all those who contributed.
Stockport Golf Club proved to be an excellent course as well as a very welcoming club. It was a fitting addition our rota of high quality courses for 2012.
The Society continues to grow, but we are always looking for new members. Playing this great game is a wonderful way to get to know people, and at the Golf Society our aim is that you can network with a group that you can grow to know, like and trust.
We look forward to welcoming more Chamber members and their guests during the season.
